Perspectives: Sarah Palin is/was not why SNL is relevant again

Despite the fawning over SNL’s success when the election fell conveniently into its hands, the writers ran with what they were given. Which were a perfectly cute (some would say charmingly sexy) Palin look-a-like and some “are-you-kidding-me” quotes from the candidates themselves.

SNL’s genius has always been in creating indelible characters and moments. The Chicago Superfans, the Blues Brothers, the Coneheads, the Festrunk Brothers. Anything Christopher Walken, the Alec Baldwin Schweddy Balls skit, the Bobby Fischer cheer.

These are the best from the past year, in no order of best…ness.

1. Jizzed in My Pants - if only for the JT cameo.

2. Googly Eyes Gardener - classicly absurd Christopher Walken.

3. The Japanese Office - moshi moshi.

4. The Beyonce ‘Single Ladies’ video - “we’re warmed up, alright. like biscuits. yeah, DANCE BISCUITS.”

5. Mark Wahlberg Talks to Animals - say hi to ya mutha fah me.

6. Laser Cats 3 - Admiral Spaceship and Nitro are back.

7. Surprise Party - “oh my god, I forgot about her face!”

Interesting that so many of them are digital shorts…
